Pleural Effusion
General information on Pleural Effusion
Pleural Effusion is a condition where fluid builds in the chest cavity. The fluid around the lungs makes it difficult for the cat to breath. There are several diseases that can cause this condition including Feline Leukemia, Feline Infectious Peritonitis, liver disease and congestive heart failure. Puncture wounds to the chest from a dog bite can cause this condition from pus buildup caused by infection, called empyema. Blood can also fill the chest cavity from a blunt trauma to the abdomen or chest.
Symptoms of Pleural Effusion
Symptoms of Pleural Effusion may include breathing with mouth open, tongue and gums may appear blue- gray, cat can become distressed or collapse after little exertion, sitting or standing with chest pushed out and head extended to get more air.
Treatments for Pleural Effusion
Immediate attention from a vet is needed to remove the fluid from the chest before respiratory failure or death occurs.
